Trip Update #4: parting thoughts from New Zealand

Since I still have at least ten minutes before the flight, and free wifi, and enough battery juice for a few more minutes, I'll add some thoughts. All random, and all in an odd order. Bear with me.

I'm so glad we finally came here. This trip was for seeing cities and not the countryside. The countryside is lovely. We did do a one day excursion to Rotorua. To eliminate stress, we are not renting a car and driving on the other side of the road. That and gas is at least $6 a gallon ($3 NZ per liter, $1USD = $1.60 NZ, too tired to do the math). Life is stressful enough.

Leaving with $4.40 NZ -- about $3 USD. A tea costs $4.50. I could use the caffeine.

Love that we were easily able to find free public washrooms (no need to find the exact change needed) and that every place we ate at had a water cup station. No eye rolls when we didn't buy a drink.

Love that prices are the prices and that (for the most part) they are in round numbers. They did away with the penny and nickel at some point. Money was always crisp and fresh, even as change from the bar or grocery store. Somehow it made life feel less stressful.

It is spring in NZ. It will be hard to return to fall and winter. Spring is my favorite season.

The trolley dinner car played mostly Christmas music. The family next to us said the stores are staring to play Christmas music. Christmas music and spring just don't mesh with me. ;)

The crossing sign makes a WHOOSH sound that makes you really want to cross the street. In Auckland we had a lot of four-way crosses. In Wellington and Christchurch not so much. Pavlov would be proud. We were ready to cross every time we heard the sound -- but had to pause to make sure it was for our side.

Time to start boarding.

Already planning a nap after we get to the AirBNB. Thankfully we can check in early.

Thankful our house sitter will be mailing my spare glasses to our friend's house in Brisbane. Only a week of not being able to see at night. My prescription sunglasses are perfect for the sunny days.
