You can either get there by foot or by motor. Evidently the way Google Maps told us how to get there was the "long way," Ashley and her friends figured out a shorter way, which (using her directions) we found on our last afternoon in town on our farewell to Florence tour.
It involves climbing uphill and being rewarded with a birds' eye view of Florence. At the top of the hill is also one of three large statues of David in Florence (and temporary gift shops selling tiny replicas in all forms). It is the best place to watch the sunset. There is often a busker performing to the crowd sitting on the steps. Groups head up there for group photos during the day. It really is nice.
