Within hours of the inauguration, I broke my strongest resolution:
Do not spend tourist dollars in red states.
We had a chance for joy and everyone thriving, and threw it away for reasons I cannot grasp. It will be a rough four years filled with much more work to keep on top of the changes, but not paid work, just fights to keep rights that were hard won.
On a daily basis, I don't know what I can do, but I do know I can choose how to spend my money. My boycotting places like Chik-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby because I don't already support them. But, I do enjoy traveling. Places like Charleston, SC and New Orleans, LA are on my wish list. But they voted for T, along with half of the nation.
I have conceded to make exceptions for Pennsylvania because it borders us, and Ohio because I do enjoy seeing family, but not the rest of them.
Our plans to escape the United States before he put his hand on the Bible (which, I later learned, he only hovered above the Bible as if he was afraid it would burst into flames) were thwarted by Sunday night's snowstorm in our area. The plane could not arrive in time, so our flight was delayed by three hours, making us miss our connection in Dallas.
Instead we had a five hour layover in Texas.
The options became starving for the sake of my morals, and risking my blood sugar crashing and hurting my health at the start of the trip, or buying dinner in the airport. As we were landing at 10 pm in Vancouver (1 am East Coast time), we opted to eat.
I chose to support a local restaurant and watched a football game on TV. Much to my astonishment, I was able to avoid the news during the layover. The TVs only showed sports. The inauguration had taken place while we were in the air. I still have not seen images, nor do I plan to.
Let's see how the next four years go with this resolution. States off the table are:
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska (though 1 out of 5 electoral votes went blue)
Nevada
North Carolina
North Dakota
Ohio (personal exception made to see family and friends)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania (personal exception made for Langhorne Players shows and Philadelphia)
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Wyoming
This leaves the Northeast, the entire West Coast, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New Mexico. Plus the rest of the planet.
Open to suggestions on how to fight back.
