New Year's Eve Reimagined

For many of the past eight years on New Year's Eve we have attended the Lawrence Historical Society's annual bonfire. Hundreds of people gather around a raging controlled fire pyre, listen to the bagpipers, and wish "good riddance" to the previous year as we toss calendars, regrets, and wishes into the flames. We often bumped into friends and wished each other "Happy New Year." If it weren't for the hundreds of people who gather, this would be the perfect send-off to 2020.

As with just about everything else lately, it went virtual. This pivot to virtual is enough to make me wonder how people survived the Plague and the Spanish Flu since they happened long before electronics.

Last night instead of hanging out with people, we bought a fire pit. The three of us gathered around it and talked. It was nice. We added part of the gazebo to it, and strung Christmas lights we have not put on the house in a couple of years. It formed a cozy place to hang out.

The hope is we'll each invite friends over and enjoy company outside where we can remain socially distant.

May 2021 bring vaccines to all and a return to some of the things we really missed.

Happy New Year!
