Though the winds were whipping and the rain was pouring, it was an uneventful three-hour drive to St. John's.
I know many rave about the beauty of Newfoundland, but the trip underscored I prefer cities and towns to nature. The endless views of pine trees with occasional partings to show water seemed monotonous.
When I googled "Moose statue" I found two. The first was in Bowring Park and the second was over a hundred miles away at a rest stop halfway between St. John's and Trinity. It served as our goal for the drive. Our port in the storm that was literally raging around us.
It was at this rest stop where we learned about the forest fires in the northern part of Newfoundland and my perspective shifted. I had been feeling sorry for traveling in a downpour when a few hours away people's lives and homes were being saved because of it. I asked about the winds and if they were fueling the flames and were told the winds were pushing the flames out to the ocean.
Praise God!
In addition to the moose, the rest stop had a great restaurant. We enjoyed the variety on the menu so much we made a point to stop there on the return trip. In anticipation, we asked our lovely server if she would be there on Friday. She said she was seeing Def Leppard perform in St. John's. The next day Blake Lively would be performing, followed by Gloria Estefan the following weekend. Who knew Newfoundland had such varied musical taste!
On our return trip, at Don's request because he knew it would make me happy, we sat under the sign that indicated a portion of the proceeds of our meal would go to a local charity. Both simple and caring.
We continued the drive. The rains stopped before we reached Trinity and the cutest VRBO cottage we have ever stayed in. The description said it was on the "ocean." While we never figured out what water it was on, it was not the ocean.
The views at sunset were even more magnificent.
