David Brearley Fun Run

Yesterday was the second annual David Brearley 5k, a fundraiser for Lawrenceville's historic Brearley House. Like last year, the race started at the house, looped around the field, and we ran along the canal to the canal house where we turned around. Dana, the organizer, was pleased that about ten more people than last year signed up, which meant it was still a very small race. Dana, who I have not seen since last year's race, was thrilled we signed up again this year. After the race I spoke with the 60-69 year old woman who came in before me. She said she did it last year, too. I said that means we are legacy and have to keep this up. She smiled as she agreed.

With five women participating, and our ages well spread out, we each won our age category.

The weather was sticky and humid. I noted afterwards it was 74 degrees, with 88% humidity. You just wanted to tell the sky to give it up and rain! It finally did spritz a bit on our bike ride home.

Unlike last year, I did not find a friend to chat with. Don started strong and petered out. I think he needs more people running to feel his pace. I started a minute late because just as the race was starting at 8:32 am, I was bitten by a mosquito. Someone helpfully pointed out that there was bug spray on the nearby picnic table. In lieu of starting with everyone else, I slapped on the protection. It helped. Not a single mosquito dared come near me the rest of the day.

Along the route I did see a turtle. He allowed me to be faster than him. Alright, he stood still.

We made a detour on our ride home to check out the new third of a mile boardwalk that connects the path from the Brearley House to a parking lot. They did a fabulous job on it. The bridge made me appreciate just how far a third of a mile is!

Fortunately we made it home before the skies opened up and brought with them cooler temperatures.
