Cuba 7: Saturday morning (Art Studio)

We waved goodbye to the classic cars and having our hair blowing in the wind and hopped back in our shiny new 40-person luxury bus. Ollie drove us into a small neighborhood to visit the Art Brut Project, an art gallery run by Samuel Riera Mendez and Delbitz out of their home in the Sierra barrio to help students with developmental disabilities. It was an opportunity to buy art and support a local non-profit.

They support artists with mental and/or social acclimations who have no professional training. Some have been isolated from society due to incarceration. The program helps the artists live independently and teach them how to better communicate.

Over the past 12 years, years 40-45 adults have been helped. The artists range in age from 20-95, but are mostly in their 40s and 50s. Both men and women are helped. They currently have 22 active artist, ten to twelve of which come to the studio, and the rest work from home.

We were encouraged to purchase something to support their art. Some of us brought art supplies from the United States which went to help them replenish their materials. We purchased a couple of small pieces of wood painted with cars. I hope to attach a magnet to the back and have Ashley write "Cuba" on it in fancy letters. This way the art will be turned into a mini souvenir.
