March 25 is the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
That's a mouthful!
Until this year when I attended the unveiling of the Lewisville Road Historical Marker I had no idea this was an acknowledged date.
This year the town leaders, families from Lewisville Road, and other history buffs gathered to unveil the marker which recognizes the site of where "the earliest community of people of African descent in Lawrence Township formed on Lewisville Road in the 1840s. Before the Civil War, Black and white residents lived here together. The Mount Pisgah AME Church located near this site formed the center of Black community life for over a century."
The marker was placed on the back corner of the Lawrenceville School. The area has been described as "small in size, but rich in history." They read the names of many of the original families, many of whom are still active in Lawrenceville.
Though it rained the day before, the day of the event was beautiful Don and I rode the tandem to it. We kept bumping into history buffs we have not seen in ages. The crowd was large.
